Important information to know about MaiHop Forward

Setting your MX Records

Internet mail is actually a fairly fragile thing, and incorrect MX records up will result in lost messages. When using MailHop Forward, you must ensure that mx1.mailhop.org is listed as the highest-Preference mail server for the domain, and that mx2.mailhop.org is not the primary mail server.

If mx1.mailhop.org is not listed as the primary mail server, and it receives email, it will deliver this mail to the highest-Preference mail server without processing it (e.g. no spam scanning, virus elimination or forwarding). If mx2.mailhop.org is listed as the primary mail server, it will simply reject the mail back to sender.

Please see our MailHop Forward How-to for more detailed setup instructions. You can learn more about MX records in general here.

MailHop Forward Queue and Message Limitations

MailHop Forward has no limit on the number or volume of messages it will forward during normal operation. (If a problem occurs, such as queue build-up, mail loops, or spam-related issues, we will contact you regarding the problem to help you resolve it.) However, MailHop Forward has a per-message limitation of 10MB. Messages larger than 10MB will be returned to sender with a useful error message.

Aliases and Multiple Recipients

MailHop Forward customers may create an unlimited number of aliases (addresses) in their MailHop Forward service. Each alias can have up to ten recipients. To create multiple recipients on a single alias, simply enter the email addresses in a comma-separated list, such as "user@domain.com,user2@domain.com,user3@domain.com". (Please note that MailHop Forward Lite is limited to only five aliases and one recipient per alias.)

Wildcard Alias

It is no longer possible to create a "default" or "catch-all" Wildcard alias in MailHop Forward because of dictionary attacks and the collateral spam problems.

Automatic Filtering

Some mail hosting providers are more sensitive to mail delivery than others. In an effort to ensure smooth, consistent mail delivery to certain addresses, some aliases will have spam scanning and virus elimination automatically enabled when they are created. (You can learn more about our anti-spam features here.)

We currently force filtering and don't allow wildcards for the following recipient domains: aol.com, att.net, bigpond.net.au, comcast.net, insightbb.com, mac.com, mchsi.com, videotron.ca, worldnet.att.net, optonline.net, verizon.net, hotmail.com, yahoo.com
