Important information to know about Domain Registrations
Important! DynDNS.com domain registrations do not include basic DNS services, mail services, webhosting services, etc. We recommend that you also purchase our Custom DNS service for your domain name, but you may use third-party DNS hosting or even your own nameservers to provide DNS.
When registering a new domain, if you intend to provide your own DNS, you must assign the domain to our nameservers until your domain is fully registered. After that, you may create glue records and delegate to your own servers.
ICANN sets strict rules on how long certain processes take such as transfers, registrations, and delegation changes. Many of them are getting faster and some are almost instant (except for transfers, those are still 7-10 days) but it all depends on the TLD. A complete list of TLD delegation delays is located in the Domain Registration KB Article. Please note that your domain's information may be listed in WHOIS before it is fully registered and delegated.
When it comes to registrations, there is one caution we cannot express strongly enough: Do not let your domain expire! Once it expires, there is no way to guarantee that you can get it back. For more information on the expiration process, please see our article on Domain Expirations. If you are interested in transferring your domain to our company (or away, for that matter), you should transfer the domain at least ten days before expiration. Previous expiration dates are honored by all ICANN-accredited registrars, so there is no point in waiting until the last minute to transfer. The further ahead you transfer the domain, the more breathing room you have to ensure all matters are settled (e.g. domain locking, updating WHOIS for Administrative contact email, etc.).
While we will miss you, the transfer away process is started by the gaining registrar. Once initiated, you will need an Authcode from DynDNS. To retrieve the code:
For most TLDs, the authorization code will be presented to you on the domain overview page. We may also email the authcode to the Administrative email address on file for the domain in WHOIS. For more information on the transfer process, it is recommended that you contact the new registrar.
