Recursive DNS Readme

Access to Recursive DNS

Recursive DNS access is limited to subscribers via an IP access list. This list is updated every 10 seconds, and is based on the IP address(es) associated with the service. If you are using a dynamic IP service, you will need to update that hostname with your IP address so that the service will respond to your queries. (A handful of hostnames such as dyndns.com/www.dyndns.com, members.dyndns.com, checkip.dyndns.com, etc. are always resolvable to ensure a "chicken and egg" scenario does not occur after an IP change.)

All machines within a given network are able to utilize Recursive DNS. For example, if you purchase a Recursive DNS /32 block (one IP) and use a router at that address, all machines connected to your router will be able to use Recursive DNS for their resolution.

Dynamic Updates

If you are on a dynamic IP address or are traveling, you can use an update client to update your Recursive DNS host. As noted above, users which are not on the access list are still able to resolve our website and our update hostname. Customers that purchase Recursive DNS services for static IP addresses do not need to configure any update clients; only subscribers with dynamic IP addresses require a client.
