Issue 14: DNS Tools: DNS Query Tool and DNS Report

October 26, 2007

When our users write in troubleshooting their DNS related issues whether it is realizing that they do not have static IP, creating a host and testing their update client, or debuging their nameservers, DNS related tools help. Since many users do not use ISC's dig, the domain information gopher on a *nix/Mac system or dig for Windows, web based DNS reporting scripts provide a great deal of insight for diagnostics.

As a point of pride, we always felt a slight jab each time we saw a third party reports referenced. What gets us more is how many reports are misleading or wrong. With that in mind, we have started a collection.

We are happy with our first two instruments:

DNS query tool - This tool will allow you to query any hostname for a multitude of records. You can also link directly to a report and provide to friends and co-workers something like this: https://www.dyndns.com/support/tools/dnsquery/www.dyndns.com/a

DNS report tool - This first version will allow you to do a quick report on the DNS setup behind a delegated zone. We run through a decent amount of logic to do a variety of sanity checks.
