Some of our most assiduous users may have noticed the new banners adorning our DynDNS.com web site or, indeed, the discreet new checkboxes sprinkling the interface.
For a few weeks now, DynDNS has become a fully accredited registrar of dotMobi domain names, such as Dynect.mobi. By using our familiar interface, you can register a dotMobi domain, much like you would register any other, and link any of our existing services to it.
Pricing starts at two years for a meager $30.00, exactly what you would pay for a traditional dotCom or dotOrg we don't believe in charging premium rates for hot domains.
If you are not quite sure what dotMobi is or why you may want to register such a domain, let us paint the picture in a few words. dotMobi is a top-level domain approved by the ICANN. It has been open to registrations since September 2006. As the name implies, its aim is to group sites that are usable on mobile devices such as Smartphones, Pocket PCs or the wide array of PDAs on the market. dotMobi domains are expected to follow some guidelines that make them especially friendly to such terminals.
Of course, in the era of iPhone and page zooms, one may wonder whether dotMobi really is useful. We believe it is or we would not be suggesting you get one. Contrary to popular thinking, dotMobi is not about dumbed down sites but about providing a tailored interface for users on small screens and slower networks.
Some companies decide to create an entirely new dotMobi site, others to alter the interface on the fly when the site is accessed through the mobile TLD making it a lot easier to administer in the end. In each case, the goal is to diminish calls to the server, offer lightweight images (or no images at all) and put a heavier emphasis on sections that would be of use to the visitor on the go. dotMobi is not only for the operator of mobile services but for the server administrator whose users sometime access resources from a mobile terminal and if you look at your logs, chances are it applies to you too.
Our support team will, as usual, be delighted to answer any questions you may have on the new TLD and how it fits in our service range. To learn more about the TLD itself, hover to pc.mtld.mobi, the registrys web site, that even features a handy little testing tool ready.mobi to check your site for mobile compliance.
Once again, we thank you for entrusting DynDNS.com with your registration and DNS needs and are looking forwards to hearing your feedback on this new feature.
